Barokksolistene

HALLING & GASSENHAUER – NORWEGIAN HITS FROM THE 18TH CENTURY

Playful, innovative and with an endearing spontaneity: the concerts of the Barokksolistene are a distinctive experience in its own right. With Norway’s most famous baroque violinist, Bjarte Eike, serving as their leader, the ensemble presents most original programmes, such as the Ale House Sessions, with contagious tunes from the British pubs of olden times.

Commissioned by AMUZ, the group put together a similar concert with music from the 18th-century Norwegian pubs. Melodies from England, Holland, France and Germany easily found their way to he north via Hanse city Bergen, receiving a niche of their own among the medieval ballads and hallings (dances) which were to be considered later as the national heritage of Norway. This colourful and lively programme explores the ties between folk and art music, without however assigning much importance to those concepts. The informed listener will recognize melodies by Lully, Telemann and Händel, but where the music comes from is not an issue. Striking melodies and ambiance are the overriding purpose, and if anyone can get those across, it is the captivating Barokksolistene! Skål!

In 1814 Norway, until then a Danish province, became part of Sweden. The Norwegians took advantage of the opportunity to proclaim a constitution of their own and to demand more self-determination. The concomitant national pride was further cultivated by musicians such as Ole Bull and Edvard Grieg, respectively the Paganini and the Chopin of the north.

In Grieg’s music the19th-century nationalism of the Norwegians was masterfully expressed. Det Norske Solistkor, which has been enjoying an excellent reputation ever since its foundation in 1950, selected some marvellous choral works by Grieg, among them his hymn to the virtuoso Ole Bull. The programme also features works by contemporary Norwegian composers inspired by Norway’s rich folk music.

Ole Bull – Himmelstormeren

After the movie you can enjoy a Norwegian platter in the AMUZ foyer.

The violinist Ole Bull (1810-1880) was Norway’s first superstar. He played on the top of the great pyramid of Gizeh, founded the first Norwegian theatre and for a while had a state of his own in America. Probably he was the only Norwegian who sold his bathwater in perfume bottles. Meet this fascinating figure in this documentary biopic from 2006.

Already at a tender age Ole Bull learnt to appreciate classical music, though being selftaught to a large extent. He grew to become a virtuoso violinist adored by the whole world. This mentor of young Edvard Grieg probably led a more adventurous life than all other Norwegians before or after him. We are eager to share with you his intriguing life story during NORWAYinPRIMETIME!
