Le Miroir de Musique

20.15: Inleiding door
Koen Uvin

During the first half of the 16th century the smaller members of the string instrument family gradually developed into an instrument called ‘vyolon’, at the court of Savoie in 1523. Ensemble Le Miroir de Musique conducted by Baptiste Romain explores the whole gamut of music for the early violin.

We do not spontaneously associate Renaissance composers such as Josquin, Obrecht and Willaert with violin music. Even so, the precursor of the modern violin played an important role in the music life of the early 16th century. The instrument was important for dance music, but also for vocal, polyphonic music such as motets, madrigals and laude, often with virtuoso ornamentation. Come and enjoy this hymn to the first violins and their repertoire.

Performers
Sabine Lutzenberger, voice | Elizabeth Rumsey, viola d’arco | Marc Lewon, lute | Baptiste Romain, violin, fiddle & artistic direction

Programme
Music by Obrecht, Josquin, Brumel, Willaert e.a.

Lecure ‘Holy Places, Holy Books’: Christianity

In the august sacral concert hall of AMUZ six speakers are invited to deliver a lecture on their personal pilgrimage and their individual quest in life.

The lectures are distinctively different, yet at the same time truly universal. They deal with the personal reflection on contemporary society and the search for a genuine spirituality, from the vantage point of a specific cultural and societal environment, which is firmly rooted in Islam, Judaism and Christianity, respectively.

Majo de Saedeleer lives and works in Flanders. She proved her mettle in the fields of education, theatre, TV and literary publishing, as well as being director of he National Centre for Juvenile Literature and of the Foundation for Reading/Chapter Flanders. In 2011 she was the first recipient of the Prize Filson Steers Mariman, awarded to people who have devoted their entire life to the education of children and youngsters.

SERIES OF LECTURES: ON HOLY PLACES AND HOLY BOOKS

SERIES OF LECTURES: ON HOLY PLACES AND HOLY BOOKS IN JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY, AND ISLAM (lectures in Dutch)

More than half of the world population is Christian, Muslim of Jewish. Despite differences there are also striking similarities. Holy places, holy books is a unique exhibition at the MAS | Museum aan de stroom about the pilgrimage to holy places, while concurrently offering at the Heritage Library Hendrik Conscience a view of the form, content, usage and study of the Tanach (the Old Testament as used by Jews), the Bible and the Koran. An ambitious project supported by several heritage associations and by the three communities of faith.

AMUZ also participates in this expo with a series of lectures on the religions involved, enlivened with music. Further information on the speakers and the musicians will be available later in the AMUZ journal. On Wednesday, January 14 a closing concert will take place with a.o. Patrizia Bovi & Fadia el Hage.

Claron McFadden & Jos van Immerseel

20.15: Introduction by Jeroen D’hoe

Soprano Claron McFadden likes to explore beyond limits. Her colourful voice lends itself as easily to 21st-century premieres as to opera or Händel. In the mood for the Christmas and New Year season, AMUZ invited her for an attractive selection from The Great American Songbook. She will be accompanied on grand piano and hammond organ by none other than Jos van Immerseel.

With their evergreens composers such as Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Duke Ellington contributed to The Great American Songbook, the canon of the most popular American songs from the first half of the 20th century. Warm your heart with these ageless classics from Broadway musicals, music theatre and Hollywood movies.
