Claire Chevallier, Sergei Istomin & Martin Reimann

In memory of the great artist Rubinstein

Tchaikovsky wrote his piano trio in Rome in about 1881-1882, subtitling it In memory of a great artist, for his friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein who died earlier that year. The trio is in two parts and is considered one of the most difficult works that Tchaikovsky wrote for the piano. The first part has a melancholy, warm and passionate sound, incorporating the composers typical broad melodies. The second part was greatly appreciated for its breathtaking, lyrically gloomy character and sorrowful expressiveness.

Collegium Vocale Gent

Israelis Brünnlein

The work of Johann Hermann Schein is among the best music written in the German Early Baroque. He composed Fontana d’Israel or Israelis Brünnlein to Old Testament texts as a collection of pieces in a special, elegant Italian madrigal style. Schein allows verses, words, syllables and accents to determine rhythm and tempo. In turn, the narrative content of the text influences the melodic line, harmonic intentions, colour and atmosphere of the songs, with an outcome that is powerful, gripping and moving.

More Maiorum (canceled)

La nuova maniera

The concert La Nuova Maniera has been cancelled. Kris Verhelst commissioned the building of a new organ that was to be premiered at this concert.Unfortunately, the construction of this exceptional replica will take longer than expected, and the organ will not be ready on time. We will reschedule this concert on another date in our next concert season.

New is the key to this concert: in the repertoire it presents and the accompanying array of affective and virtuoso ornaments that the Italians themselves already found innovative around the year 1600, along with a completely new set of instruments. Kris Verhelst has had a new organ and harpsichord made for her, to be premiered at this concert. And that is not all: the bass violins and recorders were made especially for this repertoire and concert programme as well.

Kinderen worden als componisten geboren: toonmoment muzikale projectweek

Children are born composers: presentation following the musical project week

Immerse children in Year 3 of primary school in music for a week, letting them create and perform their own compositions: the intention of the musical project weeks that AMUZ organises with De Veerman results in enriching experiences time and time and again. Inspired by the programme La nuova maniera by More Maiorum, the children will be offered elements of Italian baroque music as building blocks for their first compositions.

Vlad Weverbergh & Consone Quartet

W.A. Mozart and the basset clarinet

Mozart used the basset clarinet in three masterly compositions: La Clemenza di Tito, KV 621, the Clarinet Quintet, KV 581 and his Clarinet Concerto, KV 622. The basset clarinet is a clarinet with a particularly low range, achieved by means of a thumb key system comparable to that of a bassoon. Mozart wrote these pieces for his clarinettist friend Anton Stadler, who was employed by the Viennese Court Orchestra. Vlad Weverbergh is joined by the promising young Consone Quartet, on stage at AMUZ for the first time.

Le Poème Harmonique

Leçons de ténèbres

François Couperin was in the service of the French king Louis XIV, but composed his Leçons de ténèbres in 1714 for the abbey at Longchamp. They were written for the last three days of Holy Week and are characterised by a highly melismatic vocal line. This is music of unparalleled beauty, one of the absolute jewels of French Baroque. With Vincent Dumestre and Poème Harmonique, it is also in perfect hands.
