Abdel Rahman El Bacha

Chopin 1842-1845

Chopins oeuvre consists almost entirely of works for solo piano: extremely demanding at a technical level, but with subtle nuance and expressive depth. Between 1842 and 1845, Chopin was in an intense but difficult relationship with the writer George Sand. It is also a period in which he was reconsidering his ambitions as a composer. The results, including the Three Mazurkas, opus 59 or the Sonata No. 3 in B minor, opus 58 are among the best work he ever wrote. You will hear El Bacha on Chris Maenes impressive copy of a Grand Concert Pleyel Piano dating from 1843.

Stile Antico

A wondrous mystery

This Christmas programme takes us back to the Renaissance. Christmas songs in German from the Lutheran tradition stand alongside Catholic motets in Latin. The Missa Pastores quidnam vidistis by southern Netherlandish composer Jacobus Clemens non Papa is the focal point of this concert. His Protestant counterparts Michael Praetorius and Johannes Eccard are among the most prominent composers of the late 16th century.
