Stile Antico

EARLY MOTETS OF GIACHES DE WERT

Last year Stile Antico offered one of the highlights of Laus Polyphoniae. The international success of the young British singers obviously did not come out of thin air. Enough reason to reinvite them, this time with music that is completely new for the group: motets from the earliest volumes of Giaches de Wert.

Firmly entrenched in Italy as a Franco-Flemish composer, de Wert conspicuously influenced his younger contemporary Claudio Monteverdi. De Wert’s oeuvre spans the transition from Renaissance to early baroque, and like Monteverdi he earned great acclaim in both composition styles. The early motets that Stile Antico selected for this concert demonstrate de Wert’s masterly command of counterpoint.

Marco Beasley & Marco Mencoboni

Torquato Tasso: prodigy and celebrated poet, but also a tormented lunatic who never earned a penny with his most famous work, La Gerusalemme liberata. Until the beginning of the 20th century Tasso was one of the most widely read poets in Europe. Born performer Marco Beasley reads from his oeuvre, breathing new life into it.

Tasso’s best-known poems appeared at a great moment when music, influenced by composers such as Monteverdi, Gesualdo and Marenzio, underwent a genuine transformation in Italy. The mellifluous melodies and sensual melancholy of, for example, Aminta, are hand in glove with the contemporary spirit of the age. Until two centuries after his death Tasso’s influence on the opera and the cantata was perceptible. A rediscovery is in order! We celebrate this occasion at the studio of Peter Paul Rubens, who at the court of Mantua most probably met our festival star Monteverdi.

RossoPorpora Ensemble

RossoPorpora searched for what was produced in the 16th and 17th century in the genre of madrigalism. This quest along North Italian cities leads us among others to the Flemish composer Giaches de Wert, who in the ducal palace of Mantua paved the way for his successor Claudio Monteverdi.

Carlo Gesualdo in Ferrara explored chromaticism at the cutting edge as well as musical illustration of the text. In Venice Heinrich Schütz concluded his formative years with Giovanni Gabrieli, publishing his Primo libro di madrigali, a profane exception in his otherwise exclusively religious oeuvre. No more madrigal books by Schütz were to appear. RossoPorpora is a young Italian ensemble that made its mark at the international REMA showcase in Marseille. Laus Polyphoniae proudly presents the group to you.
