Start summerschool for advanced singers

The sixth edition of the Cappella Pratensis Summerschool will turn to the city of Mantua, where the young Claudio Monteverdi truly found his voice as a composer. During his years in the employ of the culture-loving duke Vincenzo Gonzaga (1590-1612), Monteverdi had the chance to compose both for concerts in the Gonzaga palaces and the palace chapel, Santa Barbara. The city also boasted some of the leading musicians of the day, including Wert, Salomone Rossi, Striggio, Viadana, Riccio, …

In this week-long course, participants will join Stratton Bull and Pieter Stas of Cappella Pratensis, singing music drawn from this illustrious group of composers, and of course from Monteverdi’s own ‘Mantua years’. New to the team is the Italian keyboard player and conductor of the ensemble Cantar Lontano, Marco Mencoboni. Marco’s in-depth understanding of the Italian repertoire and the linguistic subtleties of this music make him the ideal partner for this course, during which we will continue our tradition of working with facsimiles of original scores.

The collaboration with the parallel Summerschool for wind instruments (in collaboration with Wim Becu) gives an added value to the course. It opens the door to a wide variety of styles.

Due to the interaction with the Laus Polyphoniae Festival, the participants get the opportunity to hear top international ensembles perform polyphony. Each participant receives a package of 5 concert tickets.

The instrumentalists will focus on the primacy of instrumental didactics of that time, namely the vocal model. Both the tone production and vocal style of play will be applied and transferred to the instrument. Besides vocal works, instrumental works from Mantua Sancta and the Sancta Barbara church will also be performed.

In this week-long course, participants will join Wim Becu (ensemble Oltremontano), playing music drawn from this illustrious group of composers, and of course from Monteverdi’s own ‘Mantua years’.

Liuwe Tamminga

Liuwe Tamminga is internationally appreciated as one of the greatest specialists in the field of Italian organ music from the 16th and 17th century. This recital is devoted to organ music from the Po Valley. The programme features works by Ingegneri, de Wert, Luzzaschi, Brumel, Bargnani and Cavazzoni.

The Frisian titular organist of San Petronio in Bologna offers this recital on the beautifully restored Bremser organ of the Elzenveld chapel, an early Baroque instrument that is ideally suited for works from that period. In his days Monteverdi was himself steeped in these organ sounds as well.

Stile Antico

19.15
Introduction

Last year Stile Antico offered one of the highlights of Laus Polyphoniae 2013. The international success of the young British singers obviously did not come out of thin air. Enough reason to reinvite them, this time with music that is completely new for the group: motets from the earliest volumes of Giaches de Wert.

Firmly entrenched in Italy as a Franco-Flemish composer, de Wert conspicuously influenced his younger contemporary Claudio Monteverdi. De Wert’s oeuvre spans the transition from Renaissance to early baroque, and like Monteverdi he earned great acclaim in both composition styles. The early motets that Stile Antico selected for this concert demonstrate de Wert’s masterly command of counterpoint.
