Les Buffardins

Un concerto a Venezia

When we mention Venice, who doesnt think of Vivaldi? There are few composers more famous than the 18th-century Italian, who is also the central figure in this concert by Les Buffardins. They will present two characterful sonatas, one for violin and one for cello, along with the evocative flute concerto La Notte. This virtuoso piece will be performed on a replica of a third flute, or traverso in F, by the North Italian flute maker Carlo Palanca. The oboe concerto by Marcello will be played on the traverso by Frank Theuns. It is the key that makes this interpretation plausible. The ensemble Les Buffardins, founded by Frank Theuns, brings Italian joie de vivre to AMUZ.

Salagon Quartett

Schubert’s Finest

Schuberts string quintet is among the greatest works of 19th century chamber music repertoire. Two months before his death, he wrote this emotional piece for two violins, viola and somewhat atypically two cellos, creating a pleasant sonority in the lower register. Only several decades later would the work receive the admiration it deserved. Salagon Quartett, which has given several successful concerts at AMUZ in the past, will combine Schubert with Dvořák. The latter wrote his extraordinarily rich string sextet fifty years after Schubert. The typically compelling Slavic style will not leave the hardest heart unmoved.

Huelgas Ensemble

Plantijn’s Printed Music

Huelgas Ensemble introduces you to the music prints by Christoffel Plantijn (c. 1520-1589) that were so crucial to Renaissance polyphony in Europe. Both their quality and priceless musical content make these editions by Plantijn, as sparse as they are in comparison to other publications, an invaluable source of 16th century polyphony. The ensemble will perform a combination of parts of the mass and French chansons, the newest music that Plantijn included in his music prints intended for worldwide distribution.

Kinderen worden als componisten geboren

Children are Born Composers: Presentation following the musical project week

Immerse children in their third year of primary school in music for a week and let them create and perform their own compositions. The musical project weeks organised by AMUZ and De Veerman is a formula that results in enriching experiences time and time again. The 20th century Italian composer Luciano Berios talent for coaxing the wildest sounds out of instruments and creating wonderful music with them is a great source of inspiration for children to conduct their own experiments with the borders between noise, sound and music.

Jan Michiels & I Solisti

Adventure

It was Igor Stravinsky who set the ball rolling when he first passed the classical concerto off as retro in 1924. A scraping sound just doesnt go with a plucking sound, was his verdict on the golden combination of strings and piano. Whereas hammering and blowing sounds suit each other magnificently. His jazzy concerto is the model for brand new work by the young composers Bram Van Camp and Daan Janssens. Concerto number four is penned by Karel Goeyvaerts, whose mixture of keys and valves provides the suitably adventurous title, Avontuur.

Zonzo Compagnie & Revue Blanche

Berberio - production for children (6+)

Berberio turns the world of music upside down more than once in the style of the celebrated Italian composer Luciano Berio. Witness a comic in song, find out what happens when music by different composers disappears into a mixer and listen to Berios fantastic folk songs. The Italian director and video artist Letizia Renzini joins forces with Revue Blanche to transform Berios world into an amazing multimedia production. Berio would surely have jumped for joy at this cheerfully lovely musical portrait, De Standaard claims.
