Música Temprana

South American Baroque music for Christmas from the Ecuadorian Ibarra Codex

The Cathedral of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, was a vibrant hub of musical activity around the year 1700. The excellent music composed there has only recently been rediscovered, and will be performed at this atmospheric Christmas concert. The programme includes polyphonic villancicos: a genre of folk music that was popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. This popularity was mainly due to the mixture of typical Baroque with traditional Latin American music. Música Temprana will also perform other Christmas music from Ecuador and Peru.

Amandine Beyer & Gli Incogniti

Teatro Alla Moda: Vivaldi's Theatrical Violin Music

Violinist Amandine Beyer has released a CD of solo concertos by Vivaldi, an attractive portrayal of Vivaldi as a composer for the theatre. Beyer combines exciting virtuosity with grace, beauty and dizzying vitality. Il teatro alla moda, a satirical pamphlet dating from 1720, pokes fun at the predictability of composers at the time, including Vivaldi, as well as the silliness of opera and the virtuosity of soloists. Gli Incogniti has borrowed the pamphlets title to prove the exact opposite with Vivaldi’s dynamic violin concertos.

Hana Blažíková & friends

Tirannia dell’amore

Artist in residence Hana Blažíková has chosen to present a recital of early Baroque solo madrigals and arias by Italian composers who paid particular attention to the expressiveness of the text. They created a new type of music that was not so much an ingeniously devised polyphonic fabric of sound as an appeal to the emotions. Unsurprisingly, betrayed hearts, passionate love and bliss proved to be rewarding themes.
