750 years ago, the world lost a literary genius when Francesco Petrarch died. This paragon of Trecento poetry inspired many generations of poets as well as countless composers with his musical verses. Concerto Soave charts a course through glorious Renaissance polyphony towards Baroque monody, with poetry, emotion and refinement as beacons along the way. The many-layered sonority and evocative power of this music reveal a silhouette of the man who gave his people their literature. Yet we also follow the train of thought of composers such as Verdelot, Arcadelt, da Palestrina, Flecha, Marenzio and Peri, who brought Petrarch’s rich imagery into a new musical era with expressive, almost theatrical madrigals.
