Music of the Future: Schubert’s Last Piano Sonatas

“When I heard Schubert’s last three sonatas for the first time more than thirty years ago, I knew they’d be with me for the rest of my life.” Tobias Koch has plenty to say about his love for Schubert’s ultimate triad. These remarkable three pieces, completed in September 1828, two months before the composer’s death, are both intrinsically interlinked and extremely divergent. Together, the sonatas reflect the inner journey of an introvert who sought to experiment in his own way: not with explicit manifestos, but with a theatre of ideas and drama of the mind. Tobias Koch reveals how visionary the mythical ‘wanderer’ really was in this lavish recital on a divine Graf fortepiano.
