Many musicians have worked with us over the last few years to promote the polyphonic music in the Alamire Complex as part of our Strategic Basic Research project (research funded by the Flemish government). The intention is to bring people of all ages, experts and lay people, into contact with the intriguing music in Petrus Alamires books. Amateur and semi-professional vocal ensembles with experience singing polyphonic music jumped at the chance to discover the extensive repertoire in Alamires manuscripts and sing it aloud. They were coached by professional singers in how to perform music from old source documents.

We look forward to presenting the results in a series of fringe concerts. Seven vocal ensembles from the Netherlands and Flanders will each give a half-hour concert of Alamire repertoire on the AMUZ stage during Cultuurmarkt Vlaanderen. Expect a highly varied selection from the repertoire and a range of possible performance styles.

Theater De Spiegel

The Red Dragon - Performance for toddlers (aged 1,5 - 3)

A mezzo, a harpist, a viola player accompany the cuddly cushion dolls walking on a red thread. The figurines move in their own individual way, at their own pace. Nothing is what it seems as the road offers plenty of unexpected encounters and pleasant surprises. They have to move over the hill and into the mountains. They walk prudently or they run. They hop and dance, they somersault and crawl, they swim in a river or fall into a well. The music was composedby Stefan Wellens, winking at the Renaissance polyphonists, among them des Prez.

The Red Dragon was created in 2003, touring all over Europe for more than 500 performances until 2009. This fabulous production will enjoy a rerun especially for Laus Polyphoniae and for the 50th anniversary of Theater De Spiegel.

Collegium Vocale Gent & BL!NDMAN

Morgen! World première

This special festival edition of Laus Polyphoniae will be concluded in an appropriate and unforgettable way. In the apotheosis Erich Sleichim and his BL!NDMAN saxophone quartet, joining forces with Collegium Vocale Gent conducted by James Wood, will explore the area of tension between the divergent sound world of Petrus Alamire and that of contemporary music. Tonight you will hear two new creations in world première. Commissioned by the festival the Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino wrote a composition taking his cue from the compositions in the Alamire manuscripts. The result, Diverbio tra mottetti for twelve voices and saxophone quartet, engages into a dialogue with the works of Jacob Obrecht, Johannes Ockeghem or Jean Richafort. Eric Sleichim, a long-time ardent fan of polyphony too, wrote the new composition Morgen! This concert will bridge the gap between the seemingly distant eras, looking forward to a promising future for polyphony.

Thomas Hobbs, Romina Lischka, Sofie Vanden Eynde

Orpheus' noble strings

When Orpheus played the lyre, he could move stones to tears: is there any lovelier image of the power of music? Music transforms, strengthens and unites the world, and English Renaissance composers like T. Campion and J. Danyel were as aware of that as anyone. Thomas Hobbs embraces their views, bringing in a lute, lyra viol, bandora and orpharion to accompany his voice, all in tribute to Orpheus magic lyre.

The young English tenor and rising star Thomas Hobbs will perform solo at AMUZ for the first time, accompanied by outstanding fellow musicians Romina Lischka and Sofie Vanden Eynde. He tours the world as a soloist and sings with several ensembles, including The Tallis Scholars. You may well have heard him as a soloist in productions by Collegium Vocale Gent led by Philippe Herreweghe. Thomas Hobbs, Romina Lischka and Sofie Vanden Eynde guarantee a lyrical evening of the highest quality.
