Una Maratona di Madrigali di Monteverdi

AMUZ engages three top ensembles for a marathon performance of Monteverdi’s first five madrigal books. Nearly all works will be executed: a rare privilege to hear the evolution throughout the volumes. The finale will be the Lamento d’Arianna from book six, characteristic of Claudio’s later oeuvre.

Claudiana Ensemble, with Roberta Invernizzi and Luca Pianca, will kick off on Friday with book one and two. There follows a nocturne by Peter Kooij and his Sette Voci. They bring music from book three. The marathon of Monteverdi’s madrigals will be continued on Saturday by La Venexiana, conducted by Claudio Cavina. In an evening concert and a nocturne book four, five and six will be performed.

For those who are seriously interested in eating well, Ristorante da Claudia serves on both days a Marathon Menu: a gourmet festival meal.

Spitalfields Music presents

A boy and a magpie are hunting for treasures along the river shore. Monteverdi’s music forms the soundtrack for their adventure. In a sparkling world replete with colourful objects to touch, explore and use for sound production, babies and toddlers from 0 to 2 years of age discover music from 400 years ago.

The concerts for our littlest ones during Laus Polyphoniae have become a tradition by now. With Monteverdi Dances AMUZ has found an attractive successor for the popular Concertos para Bebés. The British collective from Spitalfields Music will charm young and old with this exciting and interactive production. The performers are promising musicians from the junior projects of The Sixteen and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Open masterclass Lorenzo Ghielmi

The Italian organist and harpsichordist Lorenzo Ghielmi will teach a master class for young, gifted harpsichordists and organists. Ghielmi is titular organist of the San Simpliciano church in Milan and has been widely acclaimed for his recordings both as a soloist and with ensembles. Spectators are welcome to attend this master class for free.

The participating musicians will be tutored by Ghielmi in the repertoire from the Italian Renaissance up to the organ and harpsichord works of Girolamo Frescobadli. Girolamo Diruta’s Il Transilvano (Venice, 1593) will be singled out for special consideration. In addition to theoretical reflections on the technique of harpsichord- and organ-playing, this treatise also contains several remarkable compositions by Diruta.
