Raquel Andueza & Jesús Fernández Baena

In 1589 the play La Pellegrina (The Pilgrim’s Wife) was staged on he occasion of a wedding feast by the Medici family. The musical entr’actes belong to the first operalike productions, paving the way for Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo. Soprano Raquel Andueza brings some magnificent solo pieces from La Pellegrina and the early operas of Monteverdi, Peri and others.

The programma will be rounded out with innovative music by Salomone Rossi. This Jewish composer at the court of Mantua arranged in the year 1600 a number of five-part madrigals from his Primo Libro de Madrigali for solo voice and chitarrone. The very first examples of the continuo madrigal are born at that moment, the musical language of baroque being on the verge of breakthrough.

Jan Van Elsacker & Il Trionfo

19.15
Introduction by Koen Uvin

Meet Francesco Rasi: star tenor, composer, chitarrone player and poet. Just like Monteverdi Rasi was for a long time employed by the Duke of Mantua. He premiered the title role in L’Orfeo and shone in several other early operas. Jan van Elsacker puts himself in the shoes of this colourful figure, bringing works that Rasi himself sang and composed.

In the tracks of the Gonzaga family Rasi traveled all over Italy and also visited Poland, France and the Low Countries. In 1610 he was condemned to death for murdering the servant of his mother-in-law and for attempting to murder his mother-in-law. He managed to elude the punishment, enjoying protection by the Gonzagas. Until his death in 1621 he remained a celebrated singer, praised for his gracious and sensitive performances.

Joris Verdin & Psallentes

After Huelgas Ensemble Psallentes, too, goes deeply into the rich sound world of the Missa in illo tempore, Monteverdi’s oldest Mass, based on the motet with the same title by Nicolas Gombert. Around this work by the young and ambitious Claudio, Psallentes constructs an exciting programme, featuring in addition to Gombert’s original motet also plainchant from sources printed in Antwerp in the early 17th century.

Monteverdi intended to demonstrate through the Missa in illo tempore how skillful he was with imitation between voices as well as with ancient forms of counterpoint generally. From Gombert’s work he distilled eight themes (he called them ‘fughe’), using them throughout the Mass as building stones  for his mighty construction. For this concert Psallentes adopts XL strength: with twelve singers and continuo.
