Il Suonar Parlante

Barbarian Beauty

The genuine barbarian beauty of East European folk music was a great source of inspiration to Telemann, infusing him with huge amounts of energy and new ideas. Il Suonar Parlante shares his joy in this unspoiled melodic and harmonic richness. The ensemble combines this music with a few rare, virtuoso concertos for viol and orchestra. Johann Gottlieb Graun takes the viol to the limits of its technical possibilities. Vittorio Ghielmi offers a fine example of Bohemian mastery.

Federico Albanese

Live in Antwerp

The houseboat and the moon, the debut solo album (2014) by the Milanese composer and pianist Federico Albanese immediately went down a storm: One of the most beautiful modern classical albums of the past year, wrote music magazine Rockerilla. His most recent album, The blue hour has also been heaped with praise: One of the most hauntingly beautiful records youll ever hear. Albaneses music is nothing short of musical poetry: a lyrical, rhythmic and emotional sound that combines the classical and the modern. At AMUZ he will also play music from his new album due in February 2018.

Amiina

Fantômas: silent film with live soundtrack

Amiina rose to international fame as the string ensemble with the popular Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. Many other instruments have since been added to the original strings: singing saws, kalimbas, music boxes, electronics and pretty much anything you can strum, bow or strike. They create a unique sound environment, which The Guardian calls a strange, powerful place between sophistication and innocence. At AMUZ, Amiina presents a live soundtrack for the 1913 silent film Juve contre Fantômas by Louis Feuillade: melancholy, ethereal, but also full of tension, exhilarating rhythms and compelling melodies.

Dyad 1909 & Infra

Dance films

In 2009, choreographer Wayne McGregor created Dyad 1909 as a tribute to the famous Ballets Russes. Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds wrote a score that combines the emotion of strings and piano with the electronic avant-garde. The dance production Infra is another of McGregors creations, commissioned by the Royal Ballet, for which he worked with visual artist Julian Opie and composer Max Richter. Max Richters music for this dance production was praised in the press as “achingly gorgeous [and] uncomplicated.”
