Raquel Andueza & La Galanía

So much beauty

Raquel Andueza and La Galanía present Spanish songs from the 17th century about love, passion and mischief. What is special about the selection is that most of these Spanish songs can only be found today in Italian and French sources. They were probably once kept at the library in the Alcazar Real, the royal palace in Madrid. On Christmas Eve 1734, however, a fire reduced the palace to ashes. Priceless cultural heritage went up in flames, including five hundred paintings and important musical manuscripts. Raquel Andueza’s warm but transparent voice, enormous colour palette, stage presence and passionate interpretations make the flamboyant Spanish soprano a much-loved guest on stage at AMUZ.

David Burn

Lecture: The Leuven Chansonnier

Nothing was known of the Leuven Chansonnier, dating from the late 15th century, until it was recently discovered by the Alamire Foundation. It is unusual in that it is a complete copy, still in its original brocade binding. The songbook was purchased by the King Baudouin Foundation and entrusted to the Alamire Foundation in Leuven, the international centre for the study of music in the Low Countries. On Saturday 25 August, Ensemble Leones, Park Collegium led by VivaBiancaLuna Biffi, Huelgas Ensemble led by Paul Van Nevel and Sollazzo Ensemble will perform four concerts of music from the Leuven Chansonnier. Today, Professor David Burn will look at the history, form and content of this little songbook that is so extremely important for the history of Belgian music and, in fact, the history of music in the entire 15th century.

Zefiro Torna, Steve Dugardin & Stefaan Degand

Lassus Grand Cru

The master composer of the Renaissance, Orlandus Lassus, was just as much at ease writing great spiritual works as French chansons, Italian villanelles or German drinking songs. Zefiro Torna whisks us away, plucking at every heart string with reams of poetry, scabrous complaints, funny little dances and texts about beer and wine flowing freely. An exclusive choice of wines can be tasted during the production, carefully selected by a wine adviser and inspired by the regions of Europe where Lassus lived and the typical characteristics of the songs. Countertenor and certified wine expert Steve Dugardin and actor Stefaan Degand amuse the audience with exquisite faits-divers (Dutch spoken).

Leuven Chansonnier

Conference

In 2015, the Alamire Foundation tracked down a 15th century chansonnier. This unique find has attracted attention from around the world. At a study day in New York in July 2017, the manuscript was examined by a group of leading international researchers. In anticipation of the world première of the performance of the entire Leuven Chansonnier at Laus Polyphoniae, a follow-up conference will be organised, during which international researchers will come together again to continue studying this unique songbook.
