Ratas del viejo Mundo

A[R]MOUR: Binchois, Busnois, Ockeghem

Mary of Burgundy was the last of the Burgundian duchesses. At the time of her death in 1482, Lithuanian knights were conquering colossal territories, turning the Grand Duchy of Lithuania into the largest state in Europe. Ratas del Viejo Mundo combines Burgundian repertoire with age-old, orally transmitted Lithuanian traditionals. Countless attempts by later rulers to eradicate this repertoire failed, giving the music and the ancient language in which it is embedded an extra dimension of mysticism.

Gothic Voices

The Du Fay spectacle

Gothic Voices presents a tribute to Guillaume Du Fay, one of the greatest composers of the 15th century. The ensemble reconstructs New Year’s celebrations at the Burgundian court around the year 1470 with refined two and three-part polyphony. These vocal gems, which demand exceptional virtuosity from the singers, are alternated with instrumental adaptations dating from the same period and short improvisations. “A tribute to Du Fay in the form of a generous selection of his works, arranged to create a varied musical banquet,” wrote De Volkskrant with gusto. A concert to make your mouth water!

Niccolò Jommelli: Requiem

In the 1750s, Niccolò Jommelli was considered one of the foremost composers of the time. His requiem mass would become the most frequently performed work in its genre in Europe. In this particularly gripping work for vocal ensemble, strings and basso continuo, Jommelli shows masterful skill in reconciling the lessons of Baroque counterpoint with the early Classical desire for transparency and elegance. The same applies to his Miserere, a setting of Psalm 51 written in 1759, which was traditionally sung, for example, during the procession that preceded a funeral service.
