Theme lecture

The link between Portugal and Flanders is a leitmotiv in this edition of Laus Polyphoniae. In the 14th century people in Portugal were already acquainted to a certain extent with what was happening in the Low Countries in the field of music. From the 15th century on the connections between both areas intensified, among other factors through the family ties between the two royal houses and through trade relations, mainly with Antwerp. First and foremost the mutual art trade flourished in those days. Musicologist Sofie Taes (AMUZ, Alamire Foundation, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) traces the musical connections between Portugal and our area in this thematic lecture. She singles out for special consideration the impact of printing music on the increasing knowledge of each other’s repertoire as well as investigating how a number of historical figures personify the links between the two countries. In the period when Portugal was dominated by Spain and Philip II gave preferential treatment to Spanish musicians for appointments as organists in Lisbon, there was only one single Portuguese musician who published his complete works. The volume Flores de Musica by Manuel Rodrigues Coelho contains music for harp and keyboard. It was printed in 1620 by Pedro Craesbeeck, an Antwerpian who had relocated to Lisbon. During this solo recital you will hear a selection from this music collection. Andrew Lawrence-King deserves without a shade of doubt to be dubbed the best harpist in the world. As soloist for Hespèrion XXI and artistic leader of The Harp Consort he can boast a great number of acclaimed performances and CD recordings. He is an exceptionally versatile and brilliant musician, always able to seduce the audience with his charismatic stage presence.

Interview with Josep Cabré

Baritone Josep Cabré is co-founder and artistic director of La Colombina, the quartet that will line up as artist in residence at Laus Polyphoniae 2011. The ensemble has been named after the valuable 15th-century music collection in the Biblioteca Colombina of Sevilla and applies itself to the repertoire from the renaissance and the early baroque period. Radio producer and presenter Herman De Winné will explore with Cabré his affinities with the Portuguese repertoire and his sources of inspiration for the three concerts that ensemble La Colombina will present during this Portuguese festival edition. And of course Cabré’s numerous feats as a celebrated soloist will be dealt with as well. French spoken.

La Colombina & Ensemble Daedalus

The Portuguese Estêvão de Brito could at the end of his life look back on a splendid career. At the age of 22 he became director of music at the cathedral of Badajoz. About a decade later, in 1608, the archbishop of Évora ordained him, acting on a suggestion of the cathedral chapter. In 1613 de Brito relocated to the cathedral of Málaga, where he was chosen above five other candidates as music director. Later he was also offered a prestigious position at the royal court in Madrid, which he however declined. De Brito stayed in Málaga until his death, filling his days with conducting, composing and the teaching of the choir boys. La Colombina and Ensemble Daedalus offer you in this concert programme a Mass for the Dead. Through this marvellous music you can discover the amazing sound world of Portuguese mannerism.
